Nodem 04 Jury's Special Mention

May 5, 2004, Nordic Organisation for Digital Excellence in Museums granted Lily Diaz and Mika “Lumi” Tuomola Jury’s Special Mention for their “Theatrical Masquarade Narrative” concept for the Verdi Museum in Busseto, Italy. Diaz and Tuomola lead Media Lab’s research groups on Cultural Heritage & Systems of Repsentation and Interactive Audivisual Narrative, Crucible Studio, which is a joint venture with Media Centre Lume.

Theatrical Masquarade Narrative
Concept for the Verdi Museum in Busseto, Italy

Lily Diaz's and Mika "Lumi" Tuomola's concept design approach for Busseto's Verdi Museum treats museum space as theatrical spectacle, “Opera Verdi.” It suggests creating an interactive setting, in which museum visitors become participating actors in the spectacle. The actors' movement and the props they use reveal various set-ups out of the same museum space, as well as reconfigure the relationships between museum visitors and artefacts, with the help of the latest feasible technology. UpStage 9.1.2004

Launch of UpStage: a new frontier for theatre

http://www.upstage.org.nz

UpStage, a free web-based venue for live performance, is to be launched on Friday 9th January 2004.

UpStage provides tools for creating and viewing interactive cyberformances and will offer opportunities for collaboration and communication between geographically distributed artists, as well as wider application in areas such as teaching and research.

UpStage is a collaborative software development project that aims to create a web-based venue for cyberformance. Helen Varley Jamieson coined the word cyberformance in 2000 to describe her experiments in using the internet to bring remote performers together in live theatrical performance.

Project team members Helen Varley Jamieson and Vicki Smith have been experimenting with cyberformance for several years and for the last two years have worked with Karla Ptacek and Leena Saarinen (Media Lab doctoral student) as the globally-dispersed cyberformance troupe Avatar Body Collision. Their work has been presented around the world, and it was from their work that the idea for UpStage was born. Programmer Douglas Bagnall is also an artist and film-maker, whose other current projects include a film-making robot.

The project received funding from the Smash Palace Collaboration Fund for artists and scientists, established by Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, and was undertaken with the support of MediaLab South Pacific.

UpStage is available free to artists, students, schools, and anyone interested in exploring live performance on the internet.
