Yrjö Engeström is Professor of Communication at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and Professor of Adult Education at the University of Helsinki, Finland. He serves as Director of the Center for Activity Theory and Developmental Work Research at the University of Helsinki. The Academy of Finland recently gave the Center the status of a National Center of Excellence from 2000 to 2005. Engeström's current research is focused on the emergence of 'knotworking' and other new forms of collaborative work, expansive learning and horizontal expertise in various workplaces and organizational fields.

Jaakko Virkkunen is Professor of Developmental Work Research at the University of Helsinki, Finland. He serves as director of a research group focused on organizational interventions and knowledge management at the Center for Activity Theory and Developmental Work Research. His current research is focused on methods of facilitating expansive learning through intervention methods as well as new forms of knowledge management.
