why datapuppet:
A puppet offers intuitive features of use. The combination of todays existing technologies, tomorrows technological progress and the focusing on the users real needs in the future enables designers, engineers and other required staff to develop user centered facilities. Since each user is an individual, facilities should be adjustable to a large number of users and their abilities.
We tried out a various number of puppets. The most comfortable was the handpuppet for mainly three reasons:
1. It is the least straining in use.
2. It appeals the highest personality features.
3. People of any age are fascinated by handpuppets, they would all use it.
Liisas puppet
Liisas puppet can be any handpuppet. The data tranferring interface is a separate data-glove that can simply be worn inside the handpuppet. There is a microphone integrated. Sensors transmit the puppet movements to the avatar. The avatar shows mimik, can move to any direction. The movement can be calculated by an infrared sensor, that searches for a fix point in its surrounding after switching the puppet on. Throughout the usage it will stick to that point, like an eye that is able to do 360 degree movements and measure distances. The infrared eye sends data to a coordinate system which calculates the avatar movements due to its preference settings.
The coordinate reaction of the system can be adjusted to different states of strength. A weak child that is tied to bed should have the same abilities in Leikki as his healthy brother has at home.
