THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM

About_the_program Supervision

About the program

The goal of the UIAH Media Lab doctoral program is to educate highest level researhers and experts in the field of digital interactive media. The requirement of applying to the program is MA or equivalent degree.

The degree requirements are given atLink to

The degree of Doctor_of_Arts is internationally recognized.

The requirements are given inLink to

In addition to organizing courses, workshops and seminars within the lab and UIAH, the program builds on a broadly distributed network, taking advantage of other Helsinki_area_universities and many kinds of higher level education structures, such as national and international research schools. The students can compose their studies from courses provided not only by own university but by many other institutions. Media Lab often serves as the home base for an individually tailored multi-university curriculum, providing a research community and opportunities for involvement in research projects and education.

Doctoral students come from a variety of disciplines and from many countries. Currently there are 25 doctoral students in the program.

Supervision

Each doctoral student needs to have a supervisor. If you do not yet have one, please discuss this issue urgently with your professor.

Supervisors are best experts of the field of research available at UIAH, in Finland or abroad. As to supervising the thesis, the supervisor has to hold a PhD. As to supervising productions associated with the doctoral project, the supervisors should represent highest level of artistic or professional competence.

Supervisorship is based on mutual agreement between the student, the supervisor and the professor in charge for doctoral studies. The supervisor is then formally nominated by the research council of UIAH.

Be active in maintaining contact with your supervisor. Try to organize your seminar sessions so that your supervisor can be present.

Supervision is compensated according to UIAH standards. Ask your supervisor to bill for the hours, at least yearly. Download bill form .

General research studies

General research studies (code 40001), focused on Science and Art Philosophy, scientific and artistic research methods, are common to all UIAH doctoral students, organized by the Department of ArtLink to

These studies form the obligatory foundation of the doctoral studies, altogether worth 10 cr. Unfortunately, everything is not covered in English, and it will be necessary to replace some of the required courses with books or courses elsewhere.

PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE

A recommendation for replacement of the philosophy of science is a referate and essay on

1) Kuhn, T. (1962). The Structure of Scienfific Revolutions. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, as reflected against your own research

2) Dewey, J. (1929). The Quest for Certainty: A Study of the Relation of Knowledge and Action.

AESTHETICS AND PHILOSOPHY OF ART 01061

4 (2+2) cr

Teacher: Ossi NaukkarineneMail to

Goal and contents:

The goal is to deepen one's knowledge of some core issues of philosophy of art and aesthetics, including the definition, ontology, and interpretation of art, as well as the concepts of beauty and ugliness. At the same time, students are suggested to seek for applications of terms and models of aesthetics with respect to their own post graduate projects.

Forms of studying:

The students are expected to write either two brief or one broader essay. This assignment is to be based on basic literature of aesthetics and philosophy of art (see below), and some auxiliary literature specific to the student's own post graduate research, to be negotiated case by case.

Literature :

One of the following:

- Carroll, Noel: Philosophy of art (Routledge 1999)

- Eaton, Marcia Muelder: Basic Issues in Aesthetics (Wadsworth Publishing Company 1988)

- Lyas, Colin: Aesthetics (UCL Press 1997)

One of the two:

- Beardsley, Monroe C.: Aesthetics from Classical Greece to the Present (University of Alabama Press 1988 (1966)

- Kivy, Peter (ed.): Essays on the history of aesthetics (University of Rochester 1992)

Other literature to ber negotiated with Ossi Naukkarinen.eMail to

PUBLICATION PLAN

Groundwork_stage_(1st_year) Work_in_progress_(years_2-3) Final_stage_(last_years)

Groundwork stage (1st year)

Typical publications of this stage are abstracts and papers setting the premises and theoretical background and discussing the focus and basic concepts of the work to be done. It is extreme.y important to be in interaction with peers and senior researchers at this stage. This is what the seminar is for. Don't be too shy to publish already at this stage. A number of multidisciplinary seminars, symposia, and conferences will provide suitable forums for the preliminary stage publicity. The better if the proceedings are published. Consider our domestic Working papersLink to
Main index

Work in progress (years 2-3)

Publications of this stage may involve, .e.g., methodological questions. Aim preferably at referee journals and conferences, but do not reject more casual occassions of sharing experiences with peers. Go international, there is no reason to stick to national forums.
Main index

Final stage (last years)

Reporting finished or almost finished work, analysis and evaluation. Choose international referee journals. Go ahead and measure your global expertise.

MA courses

MA courses may be relevant to your studies but they do not translate directly into doctoral studies, but require addtional bridging to meet the post graduate standard. Usually this means defining some kind of a deepening aspect, in terms of:

-a short written text in which you reflect the course against your own project

-a text, given by the teacher, related to your own work

Negotiate this case by case with your professor.

Studying inside and outside

UIAH doctoral students can attend any post graduate courses offered by other departments of the university.Link to

Attending to MA level courses is recommended if you think you are missing some new media skills or insights that are crucial to your work. Please note that the right to attend is not automatic but has to be negotiated with the teacher in charge.

The post graduate curricula of TEAK and Sibelius Academy are offered to UIAH doctoral students without any further need to negotiate.

For courses taken in other universities outside UIAH, you can take advantage of the JOO agreement. Fill the form and bring it to your professor for approval.

We are also part of certain networks that may guarantee free studyies outside UIAH.

How to prepare a seminar presentation

The seminar presentation is an oral presentation based on either 1) a paper or 2) an abstract. The aim is to convey your ideas to others for discussion and feedback.Don't just read from the paper! Suppose others have read it, and build on the assumption that they already know the basics you presented in the written form. The verbal presentation should be based on the written paper, deepening and clarifying it. Prepare your presentation carefully, preferably using a structured set of transparencies, preferably a digital presentation. As to estimating the duration, a good rule of thumb 1 - 1.5. minutes per slide. Guidelines for giving an oral presentation, check e.g. the link.Link to

An abstract is a condensed presentation, typically outlining preliminary ideas and research designs. It fits on one to a few pages and does not take more than half an hour to present. 8 - 15 slides would sound right.

A paper is typically a report of substantial research work being done or complete. It is desirable that a seminar paper is a preliminary version of something to be published. A paper should be 10 - 15 pages, and the presentation should not last more than an hour to present. If you have 30 - 45 slides, you are about on the right track. Prepare it according to one of standard academic practices, always with careful references. Instructions for academic writing ->Link to

See Publication_plan to relate and proportionalize your presentation to the stage of your studies.Link to

Opponence: If possible, ask one of your peers to be your opponent. The opponent takes the responsibility of reading you paper profoundly and preparing a few crucial questions for the seminar. It is not necessary that the opponent is of your orientation, quite the contrary, it is often useful to have an informed layman's feedback.

Supervisors: Let us make it standard practice to invite the supervisor(s) in the seminar. Please start the planning of your seminar by figuring out a date that suits to them.Link to

The language of the seminar is either Finnish or English. The language of the title indicates the language used. It is recommended that the presenter would provide an abstract of few sentences on the other language. Just ask your friend for help in translation. Hint: Post your abstract in the web and provide the link on your doc database entry.Link to

Distribution: Please distribute your seminar paper, abstract and other material AT LEAST ONE WEEK AHEAD

1) to the seminar FLE siteLink to

2) the mailinglistseMail to

It is hardly necessary to print copies of the paper for everyone, that's history.

Doctoral studies in Finland

In comparison with PhD programs in some countries, studies in Finland are very autonomous, students being responsible for their goals and deadlines, with support on demand from the professors but little push or control.

Please consider that acceptance to the program does not guarantee funding. For funding, see ->Link to

As a reward, there is no tuition.

Media Lab is an exceptionally bilingual environment, most courses being held in English. But don't expect this to be the case elsewhere at UIAH or at other Finnish universities. You will find courses and supervision in English but you may have to put some effort in searching for them. Discuss with lecturers about flexible arrangements with respect to the language.

As a rule of thumb, the language of the announcement indicates the language of the event, too.

As to seminar papers, it is recommended that those that give their papers in Finnish would also provide an abstract in English.
